Joanne Zuhl served as the executive editor from 2002 until 2021. Her career in journalism, as a reporter and editor, spans more than 25 years, the last 18 involved in the street paper movement with Street Roots. During her tenure, the newspaper has grown from being a monthly publication to an award-winning weekly, reaching an estimated 20,000 readers each week in print and online. She served as a board member and vice chair of the International Network of Street Papers and continues to be an avid supporter of the national and global street paper movement.
In honor of Joanne Zuhl's contributions to social justice journalism, the global street newspaper movement and the next generation of journalists, Street Roots has set up the annual Zuhl fellowship. Contribute to this fund in her honor.
The Street Roots Zuhl Fellowship provides a qualifying candidate the opportunity to apply their journalism skills in a supportive environment to broaden their experience in social justice journalism at a nonprofit newspaper within the street newspaper movement. The fellowship will be tailored to meet a particular fellow's goals. Our coverage spans poverty, homelessness and housing issues, as well as racial, economic and environmental justice.
