Michael Bailey is grateful for resources in Portland and would like for others to be aware of and have access to these opportunities. Organizations like Central City Concern, Do Good Multnomah and Wy’East Men’s Transitional Home offer warming shelters and warm clothing.
For someone who lives outside much of the time, these resources are life savers.
Michael also feels fortunate to be a part of Street Roots. He’s been a vendor for about five years, having learned about Street Roots from a friend who knew he needed income.
“I figured I’d give Street Roots a chance, I’m always open to new friendships and new people,” Michael said.
For Michael, Street Roots offered a “center to be involved in."
“With Street Roots, I could find and create a family," he said. "It feels good to belong to a group of people who care about you. It gives you new meaning in life.
“Being a part of the Street Roots team gives me a community to belong to and friendships which are so important to me.”
Security is critical to Michael — especially job security.
“I’d love some job security,” he said. “It’s hard to cope with no job. Everybody needs something to do. I’d love a job where I could work 40 hours a week.”
Throughout his adult life, Michael worked in construction, maintenance, janitorial services, cooking and cleaning. He’s trying to use his network of past jobs and friends as he searches for a job that pays a living wage. Right now, he’s looking into federal jobs programs. He’s also looking at janitorial jobs with a company on a cruise ship where the pay is good and, as he said, “it would be cool to travel.”
Michael’s dog Peaches is his steady comfort now. He has had Peaches for 13 years.
“She’s very smart,” he said. “She loves kids and she loves having puppies too.”
Michael feels grateful for his Street Roots customers, who, he said, are always “kind and courteous.” As a vendor, he tries to be open with his customers and familiar with the articles in the paper.
“Every one of my customers is open and generous,” he said.
As the winter progresses, Michael is focused on warmth and security. Asked about his favorite things, he said “I like to work.” He continues to expand his network and portfolio.
“I plan to apply for a passport. I think more ID will help me develop my portfolio as I look for a job,” Michael said.
Michael wanted to express his gratitude to Street Roots, to his customers, and to his readers, all who have “been there for me.”
